Five Star Disaster Services repairs fire and smoke damage in homes, apartment buildings, stores, and offices across Walla Walla, the Tri-Cities, and Northeast Oregon. Flames burn through drywall and wood, and smoke coats nearly every surface with soot and leaves a hard-to-remove odor. A fire can upend your life in minutes. Suddenly you’re dealing with a damaged home, an insurance claim, and maybe nowhere to stay, all at the same time. We take as much of that off your plate as we can. Our local team handles the restoration and rebuild, walks you through every step, and stays on the claim with your insurance carrier until it’s 100% settled.
Both Five Star and the technicians who clean your property are IICRC-certified, so your cleanup follows the restoration industry’s established standards, not guesswork. We’re also an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm. If your home was built before 1978, that means burned trim and painted drywall come out without spreading lead dust through the house your family will move back into.
We’re licensed in Washington (WA #FIVESSD870BS) and Oregon (CCB #201493), and you can look up both before you hire us. We’re also bonded and insured on every job, so you’re covered if something goes wrong while we work on your property.
A local family owns and runs Five Star, and the crews who clean up after a fire live in the towns we serve. The people restoring your home are part of the community they’re working in.

Our fire and smoke restoration follows six steps, from assessing the damage to rebuilding what was lost. Knowing what comes next makes a stressful process easier to plan around.
We answer 24/7 and get a crew to your property within one to two hours. We inspect every room, including the ones the fire never reached, and note where the fire burned, how far the soot spread, and which materials can be cleaned and which have to be replaced.
We board up broken windows, doors, and other openings so no one can get in. Then we move your belongings to a safe area, protecting them from further smoke and soot damage and from anything that could happen while we work.
We haul out burned debris and charred building materials, then clean the soot and smoke film off the remaining walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. For charred framing in places like attics, we use dry ice blasting, which strips soot off wood without water or chemicals.
Clean surfaces aren’t enough if the smell stays. We remove smoke odor with HEPA air filtration, hydroxyl generators, and ozone, and we seal affected surfaces with an encapsulant.
Next, we clean the furniture, dishes, decor, and other contents that smoke and soot reached. Carpet pad and upholstered furniture absorb smoke, so when the smoke was heavy, they sometimes can’t be saved.
Our own reconstruction crew frames in new wood where the fire charred it, then hangs drywall and installs trim and flooring to replace what the fire and smoke ruined. Along the way, we give your adjuster the photos and itemized estimate the claim needs. The job is done when your home is fully restored and ready for you to move back in.
A fire job can also call for moisture drying, mold removal, dry ice blasting, or reconstruction. All services we offer, along with sewage cleanup.
Firefighting can leave water in wall cavities, insulation, and subfloor that won’t dry out on its own. We bring in air movers and dehumidifiers to dry those materials before any repairs start.

If wet drywall and wood aren’t dried in time after a fire, mold can grow inside the walls. Our mold crews remove that growth and clean the framing behind it before the walls are rebuilt.

Our sewage cleanup crews handle toilet overflows, shower and washing machine backups, and broken sewer lines in homes, businesses, and industrial buildings.

On fire jobs, dry ice blasting helps clear smoke odor out of the structure along with the soot. It works on concrete and metal as well as wood framing.

Rebuilding after a large fire can take several trades, and you won’t have to find, hire, or schedule any of them. Our construction team coordinates every subcontractor and orders the materials, so you deal with one company instead of juggling contractors while you’re recovering from a fire.

Smoke travels much farther than the fire itself. Even a small fire that stays in one room can push smoke through the air vents and into the attic.
Walls and ceilings are too far gone when heat has damaged the drywall itself. Signs include charring, blistering, and board that has turned brittle or crumbly, which gypsum starts to do at about 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Drywall soaked when the fire was put out also has to come out if it doesn’t dry fully or its paper facing has torn. Drywall with only soot on it, and no heat or water damage, can often be cleaned instead.
Soot keeps causing damage after the fire is out, because it’s often acidic and reacts with the surfaces it sits on. Metal can start to rust within hours, walls can turn yellow, and wood floors and furniture can end up needing to be refinished. Porous materials left too long can discolor permanently, and soot gets harder to remove the longer it stays. Materials that could have been cleaned early may have to be replaced instead.
Minor fire damage may take a few weeks to restore. Larger losses that need structural repairs can take several months. The timeline depends on how much work the job needs and how quickly your insurance company approves it.
Hard, nonporous items usually clean up well, including glass, ceramics, metal, and sealed wood. Clothing, bedding, and other fabrics can often be saved with specialized textile cleaning, and the sooner it starts, the better the results. Electronics count as damaged until they’re inspected and serviced, because smoke can leave acidic films that corrode their internal parts. Items that heat has melted, warped, or charred usually can’t be restored, and neither can items that would cost more to clean than to replace.
Some smoke residue ends up where surface cleaning can’t reach, such as insulation, wall cavities, and other porous materials. That trapped residue can give off odor again when temperature or humidity changes, so a house that smelled clean can smell smoky again on a hot summer day. Air fresheners and odor sprays only cover the smell for a while. Lasting odor removal depends on finding that residue and treating it at its source.
